Symbiosis Bangladesh is an organization that works in rural Bangladesh, in 12 of the 64 districts of the country. Jamuna River Sandbar People's Development Project (JRDP) is a project of Symbiosis which is located in Sirajganj District.

School on the sandbarSirajganj District is a flood affected area and river erosion is very common and located in the very remote sandbar area. The village calls North Kumar Bari located in this district. This village is located in Monsurnagar Union and Kazipur Upazila under this district. However North Kumar Bari is not a proper village but sandbar area which is separated from the main Jamuna River and its branch.

About Two Thousands people are living in this village. Most of the people came into this village who have lost their land because of river erosion. People in this village are involved in different profession however mainly they are farmer and fisherman. Every year these people have to face flood and some time river erosion also for the whole year they struggle to earn and manage food for their family. These people had believed that fool is the only vital issue. They had no concentration towards health or hygienic issue and due to this reason people in this village used to get sick often. People also used to feel that education is such a waste of time and it is better to work in the field. We have found that there were many children who already cross their age to admit into the primary school. There were no primary school was available at this village and only few children go to school but that school was very far from the local area. Many students also dropped out due to lack of previous educational experience or practice. In this circumstance especially children in sandbar area are far away from the other children especially in education.

When Symbiosis begins their activities in Monsurnagar our program staff noticed those issues and they feel that education is the only means of any sustainable development. Due to this circumstance in the year 2007 January we begin our pre school program in this village. Initially we started our pre school with thirty students. We rented a room in the local area and employed a female teacher for this school.

The purpose of this activity is to increase the likelihood of the children of group members accessing mainstream education. Although schools do not exist in the working area, social prejudice and poverty prevents marginalised children from accessing mainstream education. Through the provision of education up to class 4, Symbiosis tries to give the children sufficient support which, coupled with advocacy, will ensure that they are able to enter government schools by class 5. Symbiosis hopes that this activity will become sustainable through the mechanism of secondary-level groups who (if given assistance to set up a community centre in the late stages of the project) will be sufficiently motivated and financially equipped to continue running the schools without external funding.

Our students including their guardian are happy for our pre school activity. Our staff not only provide lesson to Pre School but also they contact with their parents and other guardian as well so that they can give importance to their children's education and send their children regularly. Later we discovered that, after our motivation, many guardians came to us to admit their children into our pre school and they request us to run our pre school in two shifts.

Beside our pre school our program staff organize health awareness class, women rights awareness class, social issue and environmental awareness class for the pre school children guardian and for other group members in this village. Our staff believe that after these awareness classes now many people are aware of hygienic issues, health and other relevant issues. We also believe that our pre school will help the children especially marginalized and drop out children into the mainstream.
